September…Independence Celebrations!

September 15th is a significant day in Costa Rica as it marks the country’s Independence Day. Festivities, parades, and various civic events nationwide, commemorating Costa Rica’s independence from Spain in 1821.

Schools engage in many activities, streets get adorned with flags and patriotic colours, and cultural events take place a week before, also many houses are decorated with patriotic colours red, white, and blue, colours of the Costa Rican flag.

On September 14th, Costa Rica has the famous “Lantern Parade” called “Desfile de Faroles” where children, parents and educators participate with their handmade lanterns, commemorating the independence struggle.
On the main day, September 15th, civic parades are held in major cities involving schools, institutions, public organizations, musical bands, and folkloric groups.

Alongside the parades, there are cultural events, typical concerts, gastronomic fairs, and recreational activities for families across the country. Many private companies and organizations are receiving their customers with samples of typical food and traditional costumes.

It’s a time when Costa Ricans show their love for their country and celebrate their national identity with pride. Viva Costa Rica!
