As Costa Ricans, we could say that we are good beer drinkers. This is due to the fact that in our family parties, social activities, or simply while we are sharing a small delicious dish known as “Boca” every day, it could be on weekdays, the beer is a good accompaniment drink for many Costa Ricans. Since 60 years ago approximately, the beer came to our country when different breweries started working, according to what the experts in the beer’s history told us.
For many years, the beer in Costa Rica was only part of the known national beers: Imperial brand and Pilsen brand. However, in 2010, several Costa Rican enterprises decided to bet within the craft beer marketing. This craft beer has delicious and single tastes, among them we should stand out “Segua” brand and “Libertas” brand, and some other ones.
In 2017, the Costa Rican Craft Beer Brewers Association (ACACR, its acronyms in Spanish) was registering more than 50 brewers who had enterprises of different size. Nowadays, there are at least 80 craft beer breweries in the country. They are in different developing phases. In the biggest country’s supermarkets, it is possible to find an 8.19% of the craft beers, and a 41.19% of national beer. The other 50.63% is imported beer.
The Costa Rican beer, from the most commercial beer to the most craft beer can be gotten at some local convenience stores (known as “pulperías” in Costa Rica), at medium-sized and big supermarkets, at liquor stores, and of course, at every restaurant, pub, or “soda” (a kind of snack bar) that have the required patent to sell alcoholic beverages.
