The idea of developing biological products (plasma extracted from blood containing proteins or creation of fat gels) to be used in the skin has led three Costa Rican professionals to work in a multidisciplinary manner: a dermatologist (skin specialist), a microbiologist specialized in blood bank and a biotechnology engineer (specialist in cell manipulation).
Together they have updated and modernized medical techniques already known, achieving novel and interesting results. "This type of biological products can be used in the skin to substitute the lost volume (if you use the Plasma that is rich in Growth Factors)" indicated Dr. Karla Arias, the dermatologist and one of the promoters of the project in our country."Being proteins and cells extracted from the same patient there should be no allergic effects of rejection from its use", explained Dr. Arias, skin specialist.
It is not only about taking blood or taking fat from one site to inject it again into a different one. "Care in handling each stage of the process for the creation of a biological product is fundamental for guaranteeing the safety and effectiveness in the skin" said the specialist. "Everything starts with taking a blood sample or taking a sample of the fat tissue (tissue under the skin, or what we call the belly fat)".
In the laboratory the biotechnology engineer and the microbiologist are in charge of preparing the biological product that will finally be used. The main objective of the process in the lab is to make sure the product is safe (sterile) and effective (taking care of the proteins or cells). The process from obtaining the blood or fat, preparing the biological product, and the subsequent placement in the patient takes about two and a half hours.
These biological products are meant for those to look for or prefer to improve their skin with "biological" or "natural", avoiding depending on pharmacological (hyaluronic acid of botulinum toxins). For more information: 2249-4333. Web page www.ccocr.com
