We have and excellent recommendation of a place if you wish to observe more closely the Arenal Lagoon in all of its splendor with more detail, and also, if you wish, with a good cup of Costa Rican coffee or a specialty regarding local food in a creative way. The Toad Hall is a small hotel in the middle of the mountain near the lagoon and has a great view to it.  Under a boutique hotel style, this place is set among a great variety of green nature that surrounds the gigantic Arenal Lagoon. The environment in the hotel is very warm and perfect to rest with its beautiful views and the tranquility of the area.

If you have in your timetable a trip to Costa Rica, obviously when this pandemic that has been affecting everyone in the world would be already controlled, we would want to recommend you to have in your traditional food list to taste the famous “Chicharrones a la Tica” (Tico Style Pork Crackling). We can call this dish with this name because everybody eats it as a temporary dish for special celebrations, or for a very well-known snack food called “Boca” (literally translated from Spanish as “mouth”).
Pork Crackling is the name given to the pork cooked in small pieces into a big metal frying pan or bowl. Here, the pork is cooked in its own grease during some hours. The pork is added salt at the level considered good and also some aromatic herbs are added according to the house or restaurant cook.
When pork crackling is ready and hot, it is generally eaten with manioc or with boiled or cooked green plantain. They can also be eaten with tomato chimichurri sauce and some lemon slices to spread their juice over the pork crackling. Of course, in some cases, for those who like the beer, they are eaten with a very good Costa Rican beer like Imperial, Pilsen, or with the new handmade choices of beer.
It is very interesting to live the pork crackling preparation experience in any tour offered in our country for tourists. This is the case of Don Manuel Montoya at Platanar de San Carlos (it is located in the Northern Zone, near La Fortuna). He offers different kinds of tours with horse riding in his exotic property. Here, the experience of knowing the traditional recipe of “Chicharrones a la Tica” (Tico Style Pork Crackling Recipe) is included. Please, do not miss tasting a delicious pork crackling dish with any of our traditional drinks, supporting the Rural Tourism in Costa Rica.

*A refreshing route to visit in Costa Rica
Cartago is one of the 7 provinces in Costa Rica. It is close to San José, only about 20-30 minutes away.  You will find it completely different, almost like another country due to the change of the vegetation and weather, making Cartago a calm place to visit. This small province has beautiful places to visit for its spacious and refreshing views.
During the weekend we looked forward to taking a trip near this city to refresh the mind and, above all, change a little bit the environment of the city. We took the road to Llano Grande in Cartago. This district of Cartago has a special characteristic because you can find a Paradise of Roses, where these roses show their diverse colors, sizes and aromas.  This paradise is located in the Roses Touristic Garden, known as "Solo Rosas" (Only Roses), where there are more than 516 different species of roses. There is an interesting guided tour in the trails of the rosebushes. Workshops on the different cultural practices of rosebushes in gardens are available.
“The rosebushes in this great garden make “Solo Rosas" a unique garden in Latin America”, commented Mr. Martín Guzmán Calderón, the owner, who we found enjoying his work in his workshop preparing roses that were almost ready to deliver to the different florists in the country.
And what a better way to finish our tour around this area than bringing with us a bouquet of our favorite roses freshly cut; and with an exquisite Costa Rican typical meal in the restaurant of the area called "Flores y Café".
Location: 600 meters East and 300 meters North from the Catholic Church of Llano Grande, Cartago.

  • Botanical Orchid Garden is a unique place located at La Garita, Alajuela, near the capital city (San José), and only 15 minutes in car from the International Airport. Here, during more than 40 years, native trees, palms, and other specimens have functioned as the “habitat” of hundreds of orchids and plants that people can discover walking along its beautiful trails.

This real tropical nature space was born when its owner, Claudio Salas, nature’s lover and Botany’s knowledgeable, saw a great potential in the land. When it was bought, this place was an abandoned coffee plantation, more than 40 years ago. But, it had very nice trees, some of them were estimated to be 100 years old so far.

Botanical Orchid Garden can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The land is practically flat, so one does not need to make a big physical effort to go across it.   This is a very outstanding place, due to the fact that the “Guaria Morada Festival” is carried on every year (Guaria Morada: Costa Rican National Flower). This festival is carried out between February’s second week and February’s third week. This is a very good choice to include in your traveling itinerary. More information:
    Schedule: From Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Near Alajuela Province, one has to travel less than one hour to get to Poás Volcano National Park. Its main attraction is the “stratovolcano” or “composite volcano”, this is a conical and very high volcano, composed by numerous hardened lava strata or layers. In addition, it has been considered one of the most important volcanic centers of Costa Rica due to its constant activity. It is also a natural wonder in Costa Rica because it is surrounded by a beautiful park where you can take a walk on its trails.
Poás Volcano is composed by three craters: The “main” one which is the active one, “Von Frantzius Crater”, and “Botos” Crater referring to this zone’s native inhabitants.
The main crater is 300 meters deep and its diameter is 1.32 kilometers long; therefore, it is one of the biggest craters in the world. It is currently active, throwing off little gas emissions. It also has an acid lagoon. “Botos” Crater is one of the main attractions in this place, due to the fact that it is surrounded by a cloudy rain forest. Then, you can also observe the main crater where one can see a green-colored lagoon due to the sulfuric acid amount that is in the water. It has a 365-meter-diameter.
Nearby Poás Volcano, you would see a rich biodiversity zone and farming production. The National Park also has a great wild life variety. In the National Park’s surrounding area, one can find typical restaurants and handmade products.
But, another good idea is to take your lunch or afternoon snack because the National Park has special picnic zones. Of course, do not forget taking a good coat, a hat, and a scarf, because the temperature is from 8 to 10 Celsius Degrees.
