As any other country, the traditional dances in Costa Rica are very different and have a unique essence. Also, the colorful and beautiful traditional dresses enchant at first sight even before the show starts. Because of this, it is a must-do in your agenda when visiting our country.
In our traditional popular music there are a lot of different rhythms, many of them were “imported” during the days of the colony and others were born after that. And little by little these rhythms started to mix with our indigenous music to give birth to new music with a change in the harmonic form as well as the rhythm and melody.
This is how we are interested in presenting to you the Cultural and Folkloric Foundation “La Malacrianza” in Costa Rica; organization that has stood up for its various public and private presentations. This folkloric ensemble, according to the General Director, César Sandí Vargas, was born in 2002 as a response of the concern that had existed for years in several of its members about rescuing, preserving and spreading the values, traditions, dances and music of Costa Rica.
This group is named after one of the most rebellious of bulls in the present days in our country: the “Malacrianza”. Also, the phrase “malacrianza” is a popular phrase of our “sabaneros” (cowboys) when the show off their horses or they allude to their manliness.
The main goal of this group is to rescue the traditional music and dances from national authors reinforcing it with original compositions, offering a fresh proposal of our professional folklore by showing the best of each one of its members. The common purpose of this ensemble full of color and joy is to offer high quality performances, putting into practice the researches done in the field, using as resources different scenic arts, dances, music, oral tradition and acting.
During this year, “La Malacrianza” has already important projects, such as their first official recording called “Llegó la Malacrianza” (The Malacrianza has arrived), the same name as the current show, which you can get as an interesting cultural souvenir in Costa Rica, and the other project is their show called “Los devotos del negrito” (The devotees of the black).
