National design is rescuing our Oxcarts’ Value

* They have been one of the most famous handicrafts since the middle of the 19th Century.

After declaring the “Oxherd” and the “Oxcart” as Immaterial Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005, in the year 2017, the Costa Rican product and graphic designers are joining the recognized “Oxcarts’ Painter” Luis Madrigal who has more than 35 years of experience to create deep respect and love towards the tradition. So, exclusive products full of identity are back in the unique oxcarts’ painting.

“El Canto” (“Singing”) is the Brand that represents this interesting design and fashionable project in Costa Rica. It is the only one in its environment due to the fact that this is the first time in which the oxcarts’ ornamentation technique is being worked in detail, joining an oxcart painter (Luis Madrigal) and a graphic designer (Daniel Ramírez).

Its name “El Canto” (“Singing”) is from the oxcart’s unique sound. Each of them makes a special sound while traveling. Many years ago, it was possible to recognize who was coming when his/her oxcart was traveling from a distance of 1 kilometer from the point you were in your current position, only by hearing his/her oxcart’s sound. We were explained by El Canto’s Designer and Manager, Vanessa Chacón, that it was a very personal way of expression.

These exclusive garments are available at the main design shops: Apartado Creativo, Ñ, Este o Este, Casa Diwo, Piso 7, Espacio, Insólita, CL Casa de Modas, Coral Boutique, and Guatu in Guanacaste. Ordering by Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp 8857-7666, it will be sent to any part of the world. Contacts: www.facebook.com/elcantodelacarreta/    @elcanto.cr

Doubtlessly, this would be one of the best gifts you can take from Costa Rica, because each piece is exclusive, to use frequently, in addition, it is a souvenir full of Art and History.

Homeland Effect: Rescuing what is National

We visited an interesting shop that captured our attention for its graphic design. It tries to note on many of its little offered gifts, things that are very typical from Costa Rica. They are “Homeland Effect”.

Their main desire was to undertake a business to get something positive, mixed with the homeland’s passion. They saw the need to create a fostering product about the Costa Rican identity within a modern design. In that time, they initiated their main products: We were told by the founders that they thought about the stickers made with Costa Rican-related-designs.

Once you go into the store, the first things that you would like best are the modern pillows with lining and the wrapped water bottles. Those products are made with flora, fauna, and Costa Rican beaches designs. These products’ designs are original and they are fully focused on Costa Rica’s culture.

The fabric used by them to make these beautiful pillows is jute because it symbolizes the coffee bags. In this way, we try to reinforce the Costa Rican popularity. All those pillows have a zipper and we can take out the stuffing to wash them well. They are mixed with damask and created with thermoadhesive material which is more washing and using resistant.

The shop is located in San Pedro, one can send these products to many parts of the world at Costa Rica’s Post Office. More information: www.instagram.com/efectopatriacr

Pottery is Rescuing our Costa Rican Culture

Recently, we have been in a high-level-artisan exhibition whose brand name is “Enraizados” (“enraizados”: deeply rooted). This is a pottery-based project that has been developed taking the Costa Rican Culture as a key element. They used the word “rooted” as a pretext for their logo and all their workshop design concept.

Among their main products are the “Mascarada” cups (“mascarada”: masquerade), although they make many other ones like coffee-filtering objects, jugs, glasses, and also spoons. “Enraizados” has also been dedicated to develop personalized projects and pieces like sculptures, or artistic projects.

Its artist and owner, José Eduardo Montero Montero, is telling us that his objective is to be known by all the possible people. But, his main public is composed by those adults who are appreciating the unique culture and design. He is also addressing to those ones who are interested on the popular culture.

The popular “Barveña” masquerade is a patrimonial good and the Enraizados brand is trying to take this part of our people to the homes with the most people number, its owner emphasized.

The personalized design is one of the greatest attributes of these Costa Rican pottery artists. It also stands out the exclusiveness, because each piece is unique and completely handmade. So, this guarantees that two pieces are not exactly the same. The design shown in the pieces is very well thought, due to the fact that it tries to recognize and appreciate our traditional mask makers’ remnants.

The “Enraizados” handmade and artistic pottery is not hesitating that the next year 2018 would be full of new products and characters on its “mascarada” cups. It would also have architectural projects with environments’ design.

But, where can we get an exclusive “Enraizados” cup? We can get it at Kiosko San José (San José Newsstand), Satisfactory, Finca Rosa Blanca Hotel, El Cajoncito, and Camanance, among other design shops in San José and Heredia.

In the same way, at Correos de Costa Rica (Costa Rica’s Post Office) and at cajoncito.com one can find the service that is sending these products to other countries. More information:  https://www.facebook.com/enraizadosceramica/
